A US government investigation found an “extremely high risk” that products sold on Temu may have been manufactured using forced labor, prompting legislators in the US and the UK to criticize the online retailer.
Temu states that it “strictly prohibits” all of its merchants from using child, forced, or criminal labor.
The company, which sells everything from furniture to electronics to clothing, debuted in the US in 2022 and then expanded to the UK and other countries.
Based on statistics collected by analyst SimilarWeb, it has topped global app download rankings ever since, with less than 152 million Americans using it each month.
Retail expert Neil Saunders describes it as “Amazon on steroids.” With the slogan “shop like a billionaire,” it has skyrocketed in popularity and is now sent to 49 countries worldwide.
