The minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation in Nigeria was suspended by the president on Monday due to the ministry’s use of a private bank account for financial transactions related to the government’s social welfare program. Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said in a statement that Betta Edu has been suspended with immediate effect while Nigeria’s anticorruption agency conducts a “thorough investigation” of all ministry financial activities. It stated that the examination would include Nigeria’s social investment initiatives as a whole. Despite long-standing doubts about his wealth and educational background, President Bola Tinubu took office last year on a platform to combat corruption in Nigeria. He removed the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from office for abuse within a month of taking office.
