Alarming examples of wildlife monitoring technologies, such drones and video traps, being used to harass and spy on women in rural India have been found in recent studies.
This discovery is the result of a study carried out by Cambridge University’s Trishant Simlai, who interviewed locals close to the Corbett Tiger Reserve for 14 months.
The paper emphasizes how these technologies have made the environment inhospitable for women, despite their original purpose of protecting wildlife.
In one especially disturbing instance, a camera trap image of an autistic woman from a caste that was posted on social media caused public humiliation and indignation.
Several camera traps were demolished by the local inhabitants in retaliation.
