KARACHI: In Punjab’s Sargodha, a wounded bear was saved from the barbaric and unlawful practice of baiting, in which bears are made to battle trained dogs for amusement.
The international animal welfare group FOUR PAWS said in a statement that, at the request of the Punjab Wildlife Department and the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), its quick reaction team traveled to Pakistan on March 1 to assist in the bear’s immediate rescue and relocation.
After being severely abused as a baiting bear, the authorities in the Sarghoda district seized the male bear from unlawful private keeping.
Information gathered on the scene indicates that the bear, which the rescue team dubbed Rocky, has suffered mistreatment in 35 battles to date.
