Against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, the Detroit Lions executed a clever trick play.
Around 11:49 remaining in the first half of the second quarter, Jared Goff threw the ball to David Montgomery, who passed it to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Goff found tight end Sam LaPorta following down the sideline after the wide receiver turned around and returned the ball to him.
LaPorta scored 52 yards after catching the Goff throw and thundering into the end zone. At that point, Detroit led 17-3. Montgomery scored his second touchdown of the game by running the ball into the end zone later in the first half.
At the half, Detroit had a 27–6 lead over Dallas.
Goff had 178 passing yards on 11 of 16 throws before he entered the locker room. With the two touchdowns, Montgomery gained 58 rushing yards on nine carries. The touchdown pass was the only time LaPorta had been singled out during the game.
