MPs temporarily halted the New Zealand parliament by performing a haka in response to a contentious measure that aims to rewrite the nation’s founding treaty with the Māori people.
After being questioned about whether her party backed the bill, which was up for its first vote on Thursday, opposition party MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke started the customary ceremonial group dance.
Meanwhile, a peaceful protest march, known as a hīkoi, led by a Māori rights group is still moving toward Wellington, the nation’s capital.
The 10-day march against the bill started in New Zealand’s far north on Monday and has already drawn thousands of participants, arriving in Auckland on Wednesday.
