Bryony answers, “I am mad, but I’m also bloody angry,” referring to her own struggles with mental illness and the responses she has received from others.
She struggled with addictions for many years, experienced guilt, healed, relapsed, and engaged in what she refers to as “cross addiction.”
When she was seeking support, she frequently wrote pieces about her experiences for the Telegraph, posing the question “Anyone out there?” in the broadsheet.
She says, “The thing about all mental illnesses is that they thrive by lying to you,” in an interview with the podcast Access All. “By isolating you, by telling you that you’re a freak and by telling you that you’re alone.”
Even though it can be “overwhelming,” she now views being able to expose herself to the public through her books and newspaper as a “really beautiful” way to connect with people. This was confirmed when she found out that her most recent book had just dethroned the currently popular One Day at the top of the Amazon book chart on the day of release.
This is Bryony’s seventh book, Mad Woman. However, that one really made her stop and consider.
