The idea is for a league structure with 64 men’s clubs and 32 women’s clubs. The proposed new ESL structure would compete with current Uefa competitions. Manchester United issued a statement following the announcement, stating that they were “fully committed” to Uefa competitions. United was one of the original ESL’s founding clubs, but backed out after considerable opposition to the plans. The club stated that their stance has “not changed” and that they are committed to “positive cooperation with Uefa, the Premier League, and fellow clubs through the ECA [European Clubs Association] on the continued development of the European game.” The ESL and its supporters filed a lawsuit alleging that Uefa and Fifa were violating competition law by threatening to discipline individuals who violated the rules.
