Following a heart attack on Tuesday night, he passed away quietly at home in Los Angeles, according to a statement from his spokesman, Jeff Abraham.
Lewis declared in April of last year that he would be giving up stand-up comedy due to a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.
Lewis gained notoriety in the 1980s and was well-known for his self-deprecating humor.
In the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm, the writer and actor costarred with Larry David for several years, portraying a somewhat fictitious version of himself.
His most recent appearance was in the show’s Season 12, which is presently showing on HBO. “Heartbroken” was how the network described their shock at his passing.
