Following the Labour Party’s resounding victory, Sir Keir Starmer will succeed Mr. Sunak as prime minister of the United Kingdom.
Mr. Sunak told the crowd: “The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight; there is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss.”
“Change begins now,” Sir Keir declared while giving a speech in downtown London, adding, “I have to admit, it feels good.”
Labour is predicted to form the next government with a majority of 170 seats after almost all the results have been announced.
The Conservatives are about to have their worst-ever outcome. They now have 119 seats after losing more than 248 seats.
Labor defeated former prime minister Liz Truss by 630 votes. Truss’s short, catastrophic tenure as prime minister caused a decline in Tory support that the party never fully recovered from.
With 9,958 votes, Ms. Truss’ massive 32,988 majority was reversed, and the Reform candidate finished third.
She is one of many prominent Tory members who have lost their seats, including Sir Jacob-Rees Mogg, the former minister; Penny Mordaunt, the leader of the Commons; and Justice Secretary Alex Chalk.
