Federal charges have been brought against a senior member of a Mexican drug gang who allegedly staged his own death and lived in California under a false identity, the US Justice Department said Thursday.
Prosecutors say that Cristian Fernando Gutierrez-Ochoa, a member of the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación and the son-in-law of El Mencho, the leader of the cartel, was on the run from Mexican authorities when he fled to the United States, changed his identity, and moved into a posh Riverside apartment before being apprehended earlier this month.
The 37-year-old Gutierrez-Ochoa faces charges of money laundering and international narcotics trafficking.
Today, the Jalisco Cartel, one of the most brutal and successful drug trafficking groups in the world.
