Fatima Majeed, the daughter of a fisherman from Ibrahim Hyderi, a fishing town in Karachi’s Malir District, won over the hearts of visitors with her straightforward yet incredibly impactful installation, “The table — a project space,” at the 4th Karachi Biennale, which had as its theme “Rizq and Risk.”
Collaborating with artist Fazal Rizvi from Karachi, Fatima used art to highlight the impact of climate change on a traditional way of life and to depict the close relationship her community has with the sea. The exhibit highlighted her community’s urgent struggle for survival in the face of environmental devastation while showcasing its vibrant culture and customs. The display told the tale of a people who had made their fortunes on the sea for many generations but are now left gazing helplessly.
