Officials revealed today that a Scorpene-class submarine and an Indian fishing vessel, the Marthoma, with a crew of thirteen, collided off the coast of Goa.
With the deployment of six ships and aircraft, the Indian Navy has begun a massive search and rescue effort. Eleven crew members have been rescued, while the two who are still missing are being sought.
The incident happened about 70 nautical miles off the coast of Goa, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement. “The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Mumbai (MRCC) is coordinating the search and rescue operations for the other two, which are currently in progress. To support the efforts, more resources have been sent to the region, including Coast Guard personnel,” the statement stated.
