A spectacular incident during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War, including Lieutenant Colonel Naseerullah Babar’s daring military move, is described in a new book by Major (Retd) Aamir Mushtaq Cheema.
Lt Col. Babar touched down a chopper at an Indian checkpoint in the Chamb area during the fighting in September 1965. The position had a light machine gun and was manned by Sikh soldiers. Babar used a cunning tactic to persuade the Indian soldiers that they were besieged and force them to surrender without a struggle.
The seized soldiers were subsequently flown to a Pakistani military mess in Padhar by the Pakistan Army pilot. One of Pakistan’s greatest military awards, the Sitara-e-Jurat, was given to Lt. Col. Babar in recognition of his gallantry.
