The financial solutions and risk consultancy firm Kroll has been tasked with carrying out an impartial, forensic examination of the Capture system, which was in operation prior to Horizon’s distribution across Post Office locations in the 1990s.
Some former mistresses and sub-postmasters have expressed concern that the Capture system might have had similar bugs to the Horizon program, which led to hundreds of branch employees being wrongly convicted.
Steve Marston, a former sub-postmaster and Capture user, is happy to hear the news because he feels he was unfairly convicted of theft and fraudulent accounting.
“I’m feeling really positive about it,” Mr. Marston said to the News.
More than 700 sub-postmasters were prosecuted using data from Horizon, which also led to the forced repayment of purported shortages in branches around the United Kingdom by many others, who suffered greatly in the process.
The Post Office’s Horizon initiative is being investigated for its implementation and shortcomings through a separate, independent, statutory public inquiry.
