According to recently released court documents, Meta Platforms trained its AI systems using stolen copies of copyrighted works with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s consent, according to a group of authors.
The allegations were made in documents released on Wednesday in a federal court in California by writers Ta-Nehisi Coates, comedian Sarah Silverman, and others who are suing Meta for copyright infringement. They claimed that Meta’s internal papers from the discovery process demonstrated the company’s awareness of the works’ piracy.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by Meta spokespeople.
The writers filed a lawsuit against Meta in 2023, claiming that the tech company had improperly utilized their novels to train Llama, its massive language model.
