ISLAMABAD: The Awami National Party on Monday opposed a three-year term for the head of the federal constitutional court, while the PTI requested more time to present their proposal, as the government and opposition parties inch closer to agreement on the constitutional reforms.
“The top justice’s three-year term is unacceptable because it violates constitutional principles and is discriminatory. At a meeting of the special parliamentary committee, the ANP shared their proposal and observed, “It also seems person-specific.”
According to sources who spoke with Dawn, the ANP also opposed the idea of establishing constitutional courts in the provinces, describing it as “absolutely fanciful and absurd” and adding needless financial strain. The ANP contended that other tribunals were already providing support to high courts.
