As millions gathered for a holy plunge during the six-week Hindu festival, a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in northern India on Wednesday killed over seven people and injured almost ten more.
Millions of worshippers gathered for the sacred dip at Prayagraj in the dark before daybreak, according to drone footage. Following the rush, footage showed individuals walking over abandoned items left by escaping crowds, bodies on stretchers, and people sobbing on the ground.
Following ambulances as they raced to the riverbank where the tragedy took place, a Reuters witness noticed multiple dead corpses. The casualties were confirmed by an anonymous authority.
