DHAKA: If electoral changes are implemented first, the leader of Bangladesh’s interim administration stated Monday that elections could take place by the end of 2025.
Since August, when then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India in the face of widespread protests, Bangladesh has been governed by an interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus, the country’s only Nobel winner.
“If there is political consensus and the voter list is prepared accurately with only minor reforms, it may be possible to hold elections by the end of 2025,” Yunus stated in a live broadcast.
General Waker-uz-Zaman, the head of Bangladesh’s army, told Reuters in September that democracy should be restored within 12 months after Hasina left because he refused to back her during the violent student protests.
