A popular pet with a large social media following, Peanut the Squirrel was taken from his home for rabies testing and subsequently put down by New York state wildlife officials.
“It has been a horrible nightmare for me,” Mark Longo, the owner of Peanut, stated in a Friday Instagram video. He had acquired a sizable fan base through his touching posts over the course of seven years of sharing their life together online.
On October 30, according to media accounts, Peanut and Longo’s pet raccoon, Fred, was taken from their home by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Chemung County health officials.
