For Pakistan’s power industry, integrated economic planning necessitates a thorough strategy that tackles the various issues the industry faces today.
Fundamentally, this planning should seek to align policies, investments, and operational choices across the generation, transmission, and distribution sectors of the power industry with the more general goals of industrial competitiveness, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
For the electricity industry to have a single, cohesive orientation, holistic policy frameworks are necessary. In order to ensure coordinated planning across sectors, the US’s Integrated Energy Policy, for example, requires that energy policies be aligned with economic goals at the federal and state levels. This would entail setting up a National Energy and Economic Sustainability Committee in Pakistan in order to match the strategies of the power sector with more general industrial and agricultural goals.
