Labour will establish a new taskforce “to accelerate stalled housing sites in our country,” according to the first female chancellor in UK history.
In line with Labour’s election program, she announced that her government will construct 1.5 million new houses over the course of the following five years.
In 2019, the Conservative administration made a commitment to construct 300,000 new homes year, including required building goals for all local governments.
However, that was abandoned in December of last year, and the pledge was weakened to the point that the goal was merely aspirational due to worries that housing construction might harm nearby communities.
“We will bring back those mandatory housing targets, so the answer cannot always be found,” Ms. Reeves stated.
Thus, local communities will determine where the housing is located, but it must be built.”
In her first speech as chancellor, she declared, “We’re not in the business of reneging on our manifesto commitments,” following Labour’s victory in the general election last Thursday.
“That firm directive has been given to us. We intend to fulfill that mandate.
