It has been alleged that during the final years of the queen, King Charles had “discreet” conversations about regency.
Prior to the queen’s untimely death in September 2022, growing concerns inside the palace prompted serious deliberations over plans for regency, with the aim of enabling Prince Charles to assume the role.
But according to the Daily Mail, Prince Charles would be “extremely reluctant” to talk about the regency procedure once the royal officials come up with one.
A royal aide revealed: “He would ask, ‘Have you been through it all?’ if you showed up with all the paperwork. “Are you satisfied with this?” and that concludes it,” one person asks. He was unwilling to focus on the specifics. I believe he believed that pursuing your goals puts you in danger of failing.
Prince Charles was provided with several options by the royal advisers, such as “regency-light,” which would involve little princely engagement, and “reversible regency,” in the event that the queen became temporarily incapacitated.
A former adviser clarified why it felt imperative to have a regency plan: “We had to assume that the Queen would reach the same age, given that the Queen Mother lived past her 100th birthday.” A regency appeared all but certain. That would have been really challenging.
He went on: “It would have been extremely difficult for the regent, and you would still have needed a nearly full Queen’s household and a nearly full Prince’s household.
