The 26th Constitutional Amendment was approved by President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday, marking the beginning of the formation of a parliamentary committee responsible for selecting Pakistan’s Chief Justice.
Constitutional revisions, which give parliamentarians more authority to nominate top judges and who have recently ruled in favor of opposition leader Imran Khan, were narrowly approved by the government on Monday.
The judiciary is the primary target of the reforms introduced by the 26th Amendment. The chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) will now serve a three-year term, the Supreme Court’s suo motu powers have been eliminated, and the prime minister will have the right to choose the next CJP among the three most senior Supreme Court justices. These are some of the major changes.
