ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman, Lieutenant General (retd) Nazir Ahmed Butt, recently paid a visit to the burial of brigadier (retd) Asad Munir, who committed suicide a number of years ago.
Retired brigadier Asad, who was well-known for his honesty, penned a message before killing himself blaming the NAB for his persecution. He wanted to stop others from being treated the same way “for the crimes they had not committed.”
Asad was found not guilty by an accountability court three years after his passing.
A Nazir office worker got in touch with Saeeda, Asad’s widow, last month to ask whether his boss might pay her a visit. He persisted, but she refused to meet with the chairman of the NAB.
Butt had been intrigued by Asad’s suicide note and wanted to learn more about it in addition to sending Saeeda his sympathies. The family agreed to get together in response.
Nazir informed Saeeda and Khalid, Asad’s brother, that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the NAB’s investigation of public servants were now being drafted.
In order to prevent it from happening again, he also wanted to know what Asad went through.
