21 gun salutes, flag raising, special events honoring victims and heroes, and prayers in mosques throughout Pakistan marked the beginning of the day. The Azad Kashmir Zindabad and Pakistani slogans were also yelled throughout various events.
Although Kashmir was once a Muslim-majority region, the oppressive Dogra kings annexed it to India.
