The previous public administrator for Clark County, Robert Telles, was found guilty of murder with a lethal weapon.
After ten hours of deliberation, the jury in Las Vegas, Nevada, found the 47-year-old guilty of fatally stabbing reporter Jeff German outside of his house on September 2, 2022.
“He killed someone who was just carrying out his duties,” said county prosecutor Christopher Hamner.
Telles was then given a life sentence with the chance of release after 20 years.
A reporter for the Las Vegas Review Journal spent months investigating claims that Telles controlled an oppressive work environment and had an improper connection with a subordinate.
The DNA of Telles discovered under Mr. German’s fingernails and a video of the attacker’s car that matched Telles’ wife’s registered vehicle were among the state’s evidence against him.
During the cross-examination, Mr. Hamner questioned Telles about how pictures of the victim’s home found their way onto his phone, how a killer’s shoe found its way beneath his couch, and how his DNA got onto Mr. German.
According to Telles, there was a plot to plant the evidence.
The former official’s attempt to be re-elected in June 2022 was unsuccessful shortly after one of Mr. German’s stories about Telles was published.
