Demanding justice in the wake of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor earlier this month. The parents of the doctor, who were interviewed by news, described their daughter as a bright young lady who aspired to be a nice woman and take care of her family.
Since it is against Indian law to identify a rape victim or her family, all names and personal information about the family have been withheld.
“Please see to it that dad takes his medications on schedule. Be at ease about me.
The thirty-one-year-old physician left her mother with this final words, just hours before she was viciously attacked at the hospital where she worked.
We attempted to contact her the following day, but the phone would not stop ringing,” the mother told the news from their family’s home in a small lane a short distance from Kolkata.
The doctor’s body was found in the lecture hall that same morning, partially clothed and covered in injuries. A volunteer at the hospital has been taken into custody in relation to the offense.
Nationwide indignation over the tragedy has resulted in rallies in a number of major cities. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a nationwide strike by doctors across all hospitals in India over the weekend, with only emergency services offered at larger institutions.
