BANGKOK: As part of a regional operation against cyber fraud centers, Thai and Cambodian police raided a property in a border town on Sunday, releasing 215 foreigners, according to a senior Thai official.
The United Nations claims that criminal gangs have trafficked hundreds of thousands of individuals throughout Southeast Asia, forcing them to work in fraud centers and illicit web businesses. According to a 2023 UN study, the rapidly expanding businesses bring in billions of dollars a year.
The three-story structure in Poipet, a border town in the province of Banteay Meanchey, Cambodia, was the target of the Sunday raid. Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said on Sunday that 109 Thais, 50 Pakistanis, 48 Indians, five Taiwanese, and three Indonesians were among the foreigners who had been rescued.
