Since 2021, more than 100 McDonald’s locations in the US have been using IBM’s AI ordering system. It processes orders via voice recognition.
The public has begun posting recordings of order errors on social media in recent months, raising doubts about the technology’s dependability.
The AI drive-thru assistance not only added bacon to a dessert, but also added $211 (£166) worth of chicken nuggets to another customer’s order.
Another TikTok movie, titled “Fighting with McDonald’s robot,” shows a woman battling to get a bottle of water and vanilla ice cream, but she winds up receiving several sundaes, ketchup sachets, and two amounts of butter instead.
After deciding not to extend the contract, McDonald’s has now given franchisees instructions to remove the technology by the end of July. The trade newspaper Restaurant Business was the first to report on this move.
“While there have been successes to date, we feel there is an opportunity to explore voice ordering solutions more broadly,” the fast food behemoth stated in a statement.
