Magdalene, George Mallory’s old college at Cambridge University, has made public the letters he wrote to his wife Ruth prior to going missing on Mount Everest in 1924.
He was thirty-seven years old when he vanished, along with his climbing partner Andrew Irvine, close to the summit of the world’s highest peak.
75 years after Irvine’s death, Mallory’s body was found. Irvine’s remains were lost.
It is unclear if they made it to the mountain’s peak.
The letters have been made public to mark a century since his kidnapping.
Between their engagement in 1914 and his death, most of their correspondence was written, including the last letter he sent before his final ascent.
