Salads are often heralded as the pinnacle of healthful eating since they are high in nutrients, low in calories, and low in carbs.
However, there are certain cunning individuals who can transform a nutritious meal into one that is high in calories, according to registered dietitian Nikki Kuhlmann, RD, LDN, of the Anne Till Nutrition Group in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Three trained dietitians shared their insights on the causes and reasons behind the problem with regard to hidden and cumulative calories in leafy salad greens.

First, salad dressings
Though eating a salad for lunch or dinner may seem like a low-calorie, healthful option, the incorrect salad dressing can cause your meal to have more calories than you had anticipated.
According to Julie Lopez, RD of the Virtual Teaching Kitchen in Succasunna, New Jersey, stay away from creamy dressings.
Additionally, overdressing may be a cunning trap.
“You can always add more dressing, but you can’t take it away,” she stated.
“While some [people] advise dipping a fork into the dressing, I prefer to toss everything together. To lightly coat it, I like to add a bit and toss it.”
