According to National Grid, the British power network will require £58 billion in investment to reach its 2035 decarbonization ambitions.
In order to transport electricity from renewable energy sources—like offshore wind farms—to locations—like cities—new cables must be constructed.
Money is needed, according to the electricity systems operator (ESO), to enable the integration of renewable energy sources like solar farms into the national grid and their nationwide transportation.
The system was built with the older energy sources—coal fields, for example—in mind.
Much more offshore wind power would be added to the mix of energy used to power homes and businesses under the planned green energy plan.
By 2035, Scotland will import about five times as much electricity from offshore sources as it will use during peak hours, according to the ESO’s Beyond 2030 research.
