A US government initiative to switch from plastic straws to paper straws has been terminated by an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump.
Joe Biden, the previous president, has referred to plastic pollution as a “crisis” and signed a law that is now in effect.
Trump claimed last week that paper straws “don’t work” and “disgustingly” melt in customers’ mouths. Trump marketed branded plastic straws during his 2020 campaign.
Biden issued an order in 2024 to gradually stop the US government from purchasing plastic straws, silverware, and packaging.
Trump’s decree calls for a plan to eradicate paper straws nationwide and directs government organizations to cease purchasing them.
The use of paper straws has been criticized by Donald Trump on numerous occasions.
