Following the toppling of President Bashar al-Assad, the UK has put a halt to its decision-making over Syrian refugee claims.
In light of recent events, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the situation was “moving extremely fast after the fall of the Assad regime” and that some individuals were returning to Syria.
Following years of civil war, the Islamist militant organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and affiliated rebel forces took over the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday.
Sir Keir Starmer, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, has praised the fall of Assad’s “barbaric regime” in Syria and demanded that “peace and stability” be restored.
Austria has indicated that it may soon deport refugees back to the United States, while Germany, France, and Sweden have also suspended all pending asylum petitions from Syrians.
