It is impossible to call the taxes paid by the wealthy fair, at least not in the sense that Harris outlines.
About half of government revenue comes from federal income taxes, according to Treasury figures. According to the Tax Foundation, almost half of filers paid around 98% of those federal income taxes.
Upon closer examination, the figures appear even more “unfair.”
According to figures from the National Taxpayers Union Foundation for 2021, the wealthiest 1% of earners paid 45.8% of federal income taxes despite having an AGI of only 26.3%. Harris wants more, yet one percent of the population paying nearly 46% of taxes is unjust.
