Christina Chapman and three North Korean nationals have been charged with taking part in the intricate plot.
According to prosecutors, the Arizona resident reportedly stole American residents’ identities and then assisted foreign IT professionals in impersonating Americans in order to secure employment at US corporations.
Ms Chapman has been charged with nine counts of conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Investigators said the “staggering” operation employed 60 people’s stolen identities to create over $7 million (£5.5 million) in payments, which were then shipped back to North Korea, possibly to contribute to the country’s weapons program.
