Pictures of the broken monuments, which showed Pakistani soldiers giving up, have gone viral, with reports circulating that demonstrators from Bangladesh were responsible for their destruction.
Indian social media users have claimed that amid the turmoil, the statues—which represented the capitulation of Pakistani forces—were targeted. Shashi Tharoor, a Congress member of parliament, strongly condemned the conduct, calling it anti-Indian and expressing sadness.
Strong reactions have also been seen in mainstream Indian media, which implies that pro-Pakistan forces have gained clout in Bangladesh. The story was furthered when Tharoor called the act “anti-India vandalism.”
