According to court documents, a man from Oneida, New York, has been placed under arrest pending his extradition to Germany for the rape and murder of a lady almost 45 years ago. This is because advances in DNA forensics have connected him to the crime in a 1-in-270 quadrillion match.
Assistant U.S. Steven C. Green asked for James Patrick Dempsey, 66, of Oneida to be held in custody until the end of the extradition process in a document filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York on February 13, 2024. Dempsey is being prosecuted for aggravated murder in Germany.
According to court records, 35-year-old Bärbel Gansau was murdered inside her Ludwigsburg, Germany, apartment between June 8, 1978, and June 11, 1978.
Detectives investigating Gansau’s death discovered that she frequently left her bathroom window open to allow her cats unrestricted access. The window could be seen from a nearby walkway and stood around 39 inches above the ground.
