After fleeing reports of a fire on their train in India, at least 11 persons were killed and five injured when they were struck by another train.
In western Maharashtra state, the passengers disembarked from the Mumbai-bound train when the emergency cord was pulled, according to railway officials.
A train on a nearby track struck them. Whether there had been a fire at all was not immediately apparent.
In recent years, India has started a $30 million (£24 billion) railway modernization effort, but it has been tainted by a number of mishaps, including a significant three-train catastrophe in the state of Odisha in 2023 that claimed about 300 lives.
