After attempting to enter Brazil’s Supreme Court in Brasilia on Wednesday, a man killed himself by setting off explosives. The incident seemed to have political motivations and occurred as the nation’s highest court is under fire over cases involving extremism and disinformation.
According to Federal Police cited by Brasil News on Thursday, the alleged assailant, Francisco Wanderley Luiz, was a member of the right-wing Liberal Party, which was led by former President Jair Bolsonaro, after he ran unsuccessfully in the 2020 municipal elections.
On Luiz’s social media, police discovered posts disparaging and threatening state officials.
In a statement published on X, the Liberal Party denounced the incident, describing it as “a serious act” and stating that assaults on public institutions are incompatible with the party’s values.
