Following the disarray in the Dáil (lower house of the Irish Parliament), Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin was elected taoiseach (Irish prime minister) for the second time.
Following a heated dispute between the opposition and governing parties, the Dáil was suspended multiple times on Wednesday.
Martin was elected to the Cork South Central seat in 1989, making him one of the Dáil’s longest-serving TDs (MPs). From 2020 to 2022, he served as taoiseach.
He will remain in that position until 2027, when Simon Harris, the leader of Fine Gael, is expected to succeed him.
Martin described it as “a sad development in many parliaments in the world that they have become more angry and divisive” in his victory speech.
“They are now forums.”
