Following a press investigation into the Church of England’s handling of a sexual assault case, George Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, resigned from his position as a priest.
After being contacted by the media over claims that he had permitted a priest who had been expelled due to allegations of sexual abuse to resume his ministry, Lord Carey resigned.
Lord Carey, who had been in practice since 1962, stated in his letter of resignation that it had been a “honour to serve”.
A spokeswoman later revealed that the probe was the direct cause of the 89-year-old’s decision to resign.
This month, Lord Carey was mentioned in an investigation into the scandalous priest David Tudor, who was discovered to have given compensation to a sexual abuse victim and was prohibited by the Church from being alone with children.
