Donald Trump, the president-elect, ran on a platform of reviving American industry, raising taxes on international trading partners, and removing the US from international wars like the war in Ukraine.
However, he has proposed a more overtly assertive foreign policy strategy in recent days.
He initially made a joke about Canada being a new US state. He has since made threats to regain authority over the Panama Canal. Additionally, he restated his goal from his first term to acquire the Danish region of Greenland, which is autonomous and not for sale.
None of these areas are expected to be occupied by the US. However, these remarks might suggest that part of Trump’s “America First” agenda is to use the superpower’s influence outside its borders to support US national security and trade.
