Five and a half years ago, the 49-year-old actor was diagnosed with ALS, sometimes referred to as motor neurone disease.
Mitchell was described as “an inspirational work of art to all the hearts he touched” in an Instagram message by his family. Mitchell acted as Joseph Danvers, the father of the title character in the television series and motion picture Captain Marvel. Canadian-born Toronto native Mitchell was wed to actress Susan May Pratt, with whom he has two children. In an interview with People magazine in 2020, he disclosed that he had been utilizing a powered wheelchair and disclosed that he was afflicted with ALS. His family described him as “a hope seeker, daydreamer, dream believer, soccer player, beach walker, bear hugger… and more than anything else, a proud father” in the Instagram post.
