The dampness is the first thing you notice when you go through the door of Fazz Begum’s council flat.
A continuous leak has ruined an entire wall and caused mold to grow throughout the apartment. In her daughter’s bedroom, she opens a cupboard to see peeling wallpaper where black mold has been spreading.
Her daughters, Anzish, 10, and Aleeza, 9, have only ever known life in a moldy house. “They have grown up watching this grow too,” Fazz explains, pointing to the sizable area of moisture.
She asks, “Do you know how sad that is?”
She claims that the leak started the day after they moved into this council apartment in 2016. She has pleaded with the council to fix it on several occasions.
