Multiply the worst day you’ve ever had at work by 31. You might come very close to what Nicky Salapu went through on April 11, 2001.
On that particular day, American Samoa’s goalie was facing defeat in the most significant defeat in the history of international football.
Salapu said on the Sporting Witness podcast that he still gets approached by people who want to know about the unique competition.
It was an Australia vs. World Cup qualifier. With a hastily assembled squad comprised mostly of youngsters, American Samoa scored 31 goals without receiving a response.
Salapu, 43, claims that during the 31-0 loss, he had to conceal his tears from his teammates.
