In anticipation of a new round of protests against the results of the presidential elections, Venâncio Mondlane, the leader of Mozambique’s biggest opposition, has appealed for unity.
Mondlane, who is in self-imposed exile, called on people to join hands in their neighborhoods at 11.45 p.m. and sing the national anthem till 2025 begins in a live broadcast on his Facebook page.
“We must find ourselves again as Mozambicans,” he stated.
Since October, when Mondlane initially called for protests after denying his electoral defeat, Mozambique has experienced one of its deadliest weeks.
After the nation’s highest court affirmed that Daniel Chapo, the candidate of the ruling party, had won the election, a local monitoring group called Plataforma Decide said that 179 people had been killed in riots last week.
