Free trade negotiations between the UK and India have resumed, almost a year after they were put on hold in anticipation of both nations’ general elections.
The two-day talks began Monday in Delhi when UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds visited Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal.
“Advancing” the negotiations and making sure the agreement was “balanced, ambitious, and mutually beneficial” were the main goals of the discussions, Goyal wrote on X.
Since 2022, the nations have engaged in almost a dozen rounds of negotiations, but they have yet to strike a deal.
The high tariffs on Scotch whisky in India and the easing of visa requirements and fees for Indian professionals and students traveling to the UK are sticking issues.
