Both those who rescue them and skiers, climbers, cyclists, and even mushroom pickers encounter unexpected new dangers in the mountains. However, researchers are trying to find ways to protect everyone.
An instructor yells out to a group of mountain rescuers wearing orange jackets, yellow helmets, goggles, and climbing harnesses, “Here’s the scenario: you’re on foot; there are three victims; they’re climbers, injured by rockfall.” Snow flutters out of a metal door. After turning on their head torches, the rescuers dash through the entrance with their stretcher and enter a large, dimly lit space that at night feels like a windswept mountain.
The staged rescue is a component of a training session at Eurac Research’s Institute of Mountain Emergency Medicine.
